Her er en opsamling af de begreber, jeg har syslet med de sidste 5-6 år, hvad angår mening i livet - med links til mine tekster desangående. Det handler bl.a. mening i arbjedslivet, oplevelsen af sammenhæng, folketeorien om livsmening, den universelle og den personlige historie om livsmening, eudaimoniske og hedoniske faktorer med meget mere.
Jeg tænker også lidt videre her, over andre begreber på området, bl.a . kærlighed, anerkendelse, relationen mellem det gode og det meningsfulde arbejde, m.m. Lad os starte med en definition på mening:

Barack Obama on the Meaning of it All
In his speech to the Arab world in Cairo on June 4, 2009, President Obama('s speechwriter) put it succinctly:
"The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God's vision. Now that must be our work here on Earth."
This is a beautiful, worldy use of the concept of God. Religion and politics are not necessarily at odds. Ideally, they are about the same thing: Creating peace on Earth.

En mening med det hele, kortfattet
Jeg har gennem årene tumlet med forskellige vinkler på videnskabelige, humanistiske og spirituelle forståelser af kosmos, samfund og menneske. I bøgerne Flux og Forskning i sammenhænge (især kap. 13) har jeg præsenteret perspektiver på sådanne forståelser. Kan jeg udtrykke mit syn på tingene i én sætning? Håbløst personlig og uigennemskuelig må en sådan sætning jo blive, men kan det lade sig gøre? Jeg prøver her, nærmest for sportens skyld:

Læring defineret som realisering af livspotentialer
Læring defineres typisk som tilegnelse af færdigheder og viden. Hver læringsteoretiker lægger sine vinkler ovenpå, så jeg vil gøre det samme her.
Læring skal altså defineres i relation til det perspektiv på menneskelivet, som jeg omtaler i andre indlæg på bloggen her: nemlig at menneskelivets mening er, at vi hver især finder og udvikler vores særlige styrker og potentialer, så vi kan yde vores unikke bidrag til fællesskabet og samfundet. Menneskelig opblomstring også kaldet.
Hvad er læring i lyset heraf?

Folketeorien om livsmening
Hvilke ting er det, der giver mening i livet? Er det ægtefællen, et godt arbejde, at leve med Gud, ens dejlige børn, store oplevelser, gode venner, et godt helbred?
Det opfatter vi alle forskelligt. Det er dog fælles for de fleste af os, at når vi stilles spørgsmålet: "Hvad giver mening i dit liv?", så finder vi et svar. Forskning (her, s. 1) viser, at langt de færreste siger: "Ingenting." De fleste nævner et eller andet. Noget der gør livet bærligt. For har man ikke sådan noget, så er man formentlig klar til selvmordet, eller man lider af en stærk depression e.l.
Så der er ét eller andet, der udpeges som meningsbærende i de fleste liv. Hvad er fælles for de ting, vi alle udpeger som meningsbærende?

Min gamle chef på Learning Lab Denmark, Marianne Stang Våland, sluttede ofte en replik af med ordene: "Gi'r det mening?"
Men hvad vil det sige at give mening? Hvad vil det sige at en ting giver mening, eller at hele livet gør det, for den sags skyld? Lad os prøve at definere begrebet:

Meaning from Creation, Recreation and Procreation
I always get a little uneasy when people say that their children are what gives them meaning in life. Caring for them and giving them a good start in life and helping them turn into happy and productive citizens, etc., etc. "Jobs come and go, my spouse and I may split up one day, but having kids gives meaning to my life."
I want to say to these people: But what about your own life? Aren't you putting a bit of a burden on your kids? They are supposed to carry your meaning? If they knew, wouldn't they say: "Get a life"?

Does Meaning Arise from Resonance in the Body?
Almost thirty years ago I wrote a note to myself: ”Meaning is the experiential correlate of resonant waveforms”. By this I meant that the experience of meaning may arise when the vibrational energies of the molecules and cells in our bodies resonate, that is, vibrate in some sort of harmony.

What's the meaning of existence? Well, that's a huge question, and not one that lends itself easily to reflection. But let me try here. I think there are two parts to the answer:

Is Terrorism a Purpose-in-Life Pathology?
It's a challenge for most people to find deep purpose and meaning in today's secular, superficial consumer society. Some people turn to traditional religion, and a few find extreme, simplistic solutions to their maladaption and meaninglessness.
Strap a bomb around your waist and join the divine by flicking a switch. Your life, although over, has suddenly become meaningful. This is the ultimate in instant gratification, however perverse.
Telos is the Greek term for purpose, and teleology is the study of purposeful behavior. Is the modern terrorist a teleopath? Someone who is pathologically disturbed in the purpose-in-life department?

Learning, self-organization and meaning in life
A few weeks ago, I was asked to speak to a group of Danish consultants who teach project management. They wanted input on principles and criteria for better educational practice: How can we become even better at teaching project management?
I suggested that since the modern konwledge worker has turned life itself into a project, we need to teach project management in a way that mobilizes people's sense of meaning in their lives.
